Leon’s Fantasy Cut in Newkirk Plaza

Today was a rainy day, but it didn’t stop us from visiting Leon’s Fantasy Cut in Newkirk Plaza near Ditmas Park in Flatbush Brooklyn. The plaza is supposedly one of the oldest outdoor pedestrian retail malls in the country! We spent the afternoon filming and talking about the history of Leon’s  barbershop  which will be 100 years old this Saturday. Leon says they will have a big party this Saturday with lots of media showing up since it’s one of the oldest barbershops in the U.S. He also showed us the old cash register and handmade cabinetry. He also noted that all of the counters were made of Italian marble. Leon also showed us his Soviet razor blade that he brought with him from Kiev, Ukraine when he migrated here. After our interview he cut and shaved Mikhail Zheleznikov’s head and beard on the house!

The neighborhood is truly one of the most beautiful places in Brooklyn. It’s worth a walk just to see the trees and the wooden detached houses with gardens. My camera died and it was much too rainy to get good pictures so I’ll return and take photos of the neighborhood soon.
